Triax (16´21´´)

  • Author: Ivo Medek
  • Year of foundation: 2001
  • Janáček Academy of Performing Arts in Brno
  • Faculty of Music
  • Department of Composition, Conducting and Opera Direction
The title of this one-movement piece suggest the trinity between percussion and piano which is confronted in various ways with the orchestra. With the instruments of the „Triax“ carry a certain archetypal character, the orchestra repeatedly attempts to cover everything through „overriding effects“ in various forms – sometimes quite openly, at other times through a gradual diversion or feigned cooperation, As with of Medek compositions, processes play a significant role at all levels, as does the preoccupation with the relationship between pitch and sound which permeates the piece. Triax exists in three completed versions – for symphony orchestra and solo percussion interuments (premiered in Russia by soloists Mutsuko Aizava and Tomáš Ondrůšek), for large orchestra, chamber ensemble and percussion instruments (premiered at the Prague Spring festival in 2001 by the same soloists) and, finally, in this version – for marimba and three percussionists created especially for the ensemble DAMA DAMA.
