The painting entitled You Cannot Sleep is part of a series called Bonanza, working with lonely scenes from the lives of men who went to Alaska in the frenzy of the late 19th century gold rush. The motif of the search for gold is a metaphor for a journey into one's own inner self where a treasure is hidden. It is a solitary struggle and a never-ending adventure for tenacious characters.
